Velvet and the Trainer

December 12, 2002

Velvet is at Pine Dell in 100% training for flying lead changes. Jenny is 5 months pregnant, so Tony (Jenny's husband) is the rider.

Tony isn't a PNH instructor, but he is a certified horse starter and trainer in the Parelli system.  Tony always pushes the edge of everything he does.  He can ride anything with hair on it at whatever speed it wants to go.  And if anything ever goes wrong when Tony is doing anything, the rest of us JEER!   It's a family thing!

Anyway, Tony is riding Velvet in the arena.  Also in the arena is Buddy being rode by an advanced student of high school age.  Buddy was donated to Pine Dell and they are bringing him along to be a lesson horse.  The student started having quite a bit of trouble with Buddy.  He was bracing against the rein and halter.

Tony decided that Buddy needed some remedial reminders on how to "follow a feel".  He took Buddy with the intention of ponying him off Velvet....round, slick Velvet.

Buddy decided he didn't want to follow the feel of anything and TOOK OFF!.  Tony wrapped the rope around the horn and when Buddy hit the end of the rope, many things happened.

1. Buddy was reminded that the feel of the rope can be more than he ever wanted.
2. Velvet was reminded to brace, as she was forced into moving sideways a few steps to avoid falling over.
3. Tony was reminded about loose saddles. When you are going to pony another horse, you should consider tightening the girth.  When the saddle got that hit, it turned and fell to the side...taking Tony with it!

SO, the End Result was that Tony fell off Velvet.  He'll never live it down.  I'll never forget it.  A man that can ride anything at any speed fell off my horse!  Those fox trotters are truly versatile!

YEE HAW!
